Eneida M. Anjos, LICSW

Eneida M. Anjos is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. She was born in Cape Verde and immigrated with her family to the United States at the age of 8.  She has been working at DCF for over 25 years in various roles; she currently serves as the Contract Manager for all DCF contracted residential schools and group homes located in the DCF Southern Region. She has also worked for over 10 years in a per diem capacity for Steward Hospitals as an emergency room mental health crisis evaluator. Eneida earned her master’s degree from Simmons University’s renowned School of Social Work. Eneida is a passionate social worker who is dedicated to helping people in her community.  For almost 10 years she has been an active member of Nos Di Tchada I Amigos, a non-profit 501c organization where she serves as a board member.  Eneida has traveled to Cape Verde Island to make donations to the community where she was born and regularly organizers fundraisers, collects and sends donated items such as medical and school supplies.  Her dedication and commitment to her community was recently recognized by the Patriots Foundation who identified her as a community champion.

Paulo R. Pina, MD, MPH, FAAP

Born in Sao Filipe, Fogo,  Dr. Pina is a board-certified pediatrician and the Network Pediatric Medical Director of the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone.  He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Pina received his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed Pediatric training and Chief Residency at NYU/Bellevue Medical Center.  Subsequently he received a Master of Public Health Degree from SUNY Downstate.  He has extensive experience in medical education and previously served as Program Director of the Pediatric Residency at SBH Health Systems in Bronx, NY.  Dr. Pina has been a practicing pediatrician for almost 20 years and has substantial experience in practice management.  His scholarly and advocacy activities have focused on improving pediatric care quality, addressing the social determinants of health during medical visits, increasing vaccination rates, PrEP use among adolescents, and health equity.

Idalina Suzanne Afopa

Idalina Suzanne Afopa, APN Nurse Practitioner  Idalina S. Afopa is a Family Nurse Practitioner,  ANCC Board Certified with extensive experience in HIV, viral hepatitis, urgent care and and geriatrics.  She is certified in Mental Health. She began her education by graduating with a Master’s in Law from University of Aix-En-Provence, France in 1993. She later completed both her Bachelor and Master of Science in Nursing at Pace University in Manhattan, New York. She has an eclectic RN experience in Cardio thoracic, Surgical ICU and Home Care. She started her NP career with United health Care/Optum in Brooklyn NY caring for Geriatric patients. She worked at the NYU Langone Emergency Room Follow Up before she joined the Bronx VA as the Infectious Diseases Nurse Practitioner.  She cared for patients with HIV and viral hepatitis B and C in the ID clinics. She was instrumental in expanding the Prep for HIV Prevention Program at the Bronx VA. She continues to serve those who served at the VISN 2 VA New York/New Jersey Healthcare System Virtual Urgent Care Clinic since September 2021.  She is an active member of the Cape Verdean American Medical Society and the American Association of French Speaking Health Professionals in New York. She is a multilingual native French speaker, fluent in English with a conversational Portuguese and Spanish.

Chantal Pina Gomes, DO

Dr. Pina Gomes is a board-certified internal medicine physician who practices at the UCLA Health MPTF Bob Hope facility in Hollywood. Her clinical interests include preventive medicine, addressing healthcare disparities, and chronic disease management. She is passionate about patient-centered care and supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the healthcare system. Dr. Pina Gomes received her undergraduate degree in Biology at The University of Massachusetts Amherst. She received her master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Biological and Physical Sciences and her medical degree from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harlem, New York. She completed her Internship and Residency in internal medicine at Alameda Health System-Highland Hospital, where she also served as chief resident. In her free time, Dr. Gomes enjoys spending time with loved ones and traveling the world.

Jose Alexandre Rodrigues, Ph.D

Jose Alexandre Rodrigues, Ph.D., is an 8th year D.O.-Ph.D. trainee and OMS-IV at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. His thesis work, under the direction of Dr. Shannon Manning Ph.D., M.P.H., described the molecular epidemiology of C. jejuni infections in Michigan. Whole genome sequencing and phylogenomic approaches were used to investigate the population structure of antibiotic resistant C. jejuni an important public health threat. As a future pediatric physician-scientist, he is looking to pursue further training including in residency training programs such as physician-scientist training residency programs and postdoctoral experiences studying infectious disease dynamics, utilizing mathematical modeling and phylogenomic analysis. Jose serves as the Immediate Past President of the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA). Throughout his service with APSA, Jose spearheaded efforts to create a diverse and robust physician-scientist workforce including the nationally recognized Physician-scientist trainee diversity summit held in 2019 and the subsequent creation of the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee as a permanent standing committee on the executive council of APSA.

Dr. Rui Fernandes

Dr. Fernandes is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine Jacksonville and holds appointments in the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery and the Division of Surgical Oncology.  He serves as the Chief of Head and Neck Surgery, Director of the Head and Neck/Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery fellowship, Director of the Center for Reconstructive Surgery, Co-Director of the Skull Base Surgery Program and Associate Chairman of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.    Dr. Fernandes is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (ad. Hominem), as well as many other surgical and medical associations in the USA. He is an honorary fellow of the Spanish Society of OMS, Mexican Association of OMS, Pakistan Association of OMS, Panamanian Society of OMS, and the Costa Rican Society of OMS. He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally and has authored numerous manuscripts and several textbooks in the areas of head and neck oncology and reconstructive surgery.  Dr. Fernandes is the Consulting Editor for the Oral & Maxillofacial Clinics of North America, the Atlas of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North America, and is the Editor in Chief of Craniomaxillofacial Trauma and Reconstructive Journal. 

Jacqueline Duarte

Jacqueline Duarte is a Cape Verdean Physician who secured a Medical School Scholarship at the Federal University of Alagoas. While in Brazil, obtained Merit-Based Grants as Best International Student and Outstanding International Student.  Worked as Surgery Teaching Assistant, past president and founder of Academic Group of Dermatology, past Vice-President of Academic Group of Oncology. Promoted the XIII National Campaign of Skin Cancer Prevention, and III National Campaign of Bone Marrow Donation, Alagoas – Brazil. Promoted Social Events to Educate communities about Preventive Medicine Vidas (Life), Providing Primary Care to Communities in Need.  After Medical school, Dr. Duarte complete General Surgery Residency Program at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Alagoas.  Worked as a physician for a short period in Cape Verde Island.  Immigrated to the United the State, got Certified by Educational Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates in 2019. Performed a Research Fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital – New York City under the mentorship of Dr. Julio Teixeira. Many podium and poster presentation at medical meeting, and peer reviewed journal articles/abstract. Currently working as a General Surgery Resident at a ACGME credit program in NYC. Patricia Andrade, MD, FACS

She is presently working in Taunton and Fall River Massachusetts in a general surgery practice with specialty practice of breast surgery. She has been in practice for 26 years. She currently serves as the Chief of Surgery at Morton Hospital. She is board certified with the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She has participated in medical missions to Cabo Verde and is interested in helping to enhance their health care delivery. She has been on the New Bedford Board of Health for many years and continues to contribute to public health of the community.  She graduated from Dartmouth/Brown University Program in Medicine and completed her surgical residency at Rhode Island Hospital. Her maternal grandparents immigrated to the US from the island of Boa Vista and her paternal grandparents immigrated from Sao Nicolau.
