Madelaine Tully, MD

Progressive Community Health Centers,  Milwaukee WI Undergraduate: Harvard University  c.o. 1991 Medical School: University of Wisconsin School of Medicine c.o. 2000 Residency: University of Wisconsin Madison Medical School Dr Tully provides care to patients of all ages and economic backgrounds at the Progressive Community Health Center in Milwaukee’s inner city.  She teaches medical students and nurse practitioner students and has participated in numerous studies focused on the management of chronic diseases in her patient population.  She has been recognized as a “Health Care Hero” in 2019.  She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a past board member of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County. She is a third generation Cape Verdean and is most interested in primary care and the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases among Cape Verdeans.

Susan Weinberg, M.D., F.A.C.R.

Dr. Susan Weinberg is a graduate of Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland where she was honored as the Most Likely to Succeed in Clinical Medicine in her class. She completed her residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Cincinnati where she served as Chief Resident. She is a board certified diagnostic radiologist and a Fellow in the American College of Radiology. She was an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Cincinnati before entering private practice at Bethesda Hospital. At Bethesda, she served as Chair of the Department of Radiology for nearly 20 years. She developed an interest in Women’s and Advanced Imaging early in her career. She was the founder and Medical Director of the Mary Jo Cropper Family Center for Breast Care, a comprehensive center, which presently serves the breast health needs of nearly 60,000 Greater Cincinnati area women. She was the key organizer of the annual Mary Jo Cropper Celebration of Angels generating 2.5 million dollars in grants for center research and projects. Dr. Weinberg was the first female president of the Greater Cincinnati Academy of Medicine. She has served as President of the Greater Cincinnati Radiologic Society, and founder and medical director of Optimal Medical Imaging. She has served on multiple boards including Susan G. Komen, the American Cancer Society, Bethesda Foundation, Bethesda Consolidated Services, and the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine Foundation. She has authored multiple articles and research studies in peer reviewed journals, written book chapters, published and run CME courses and has participated in several TV and radio presentations. She has been honored as a Health Care Hero, Top Doctor, and Bethesda Physician of the Year. She is a docent at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Dr. Weinberg retired from her full time diagnostic radiology practice in 2019 and presently works part-time in Ohio.

Dr. Teixeira

Dr. Teixeira is a graduate from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his general surgery residency at New York Medical College along with a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was Assistant Professor of Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Director of Bariatric Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center until 2005 when he joined the Faculty at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center where  he served as Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. Dr. Teixeira specializes in laparoscopic surgical techniques to treat diseases of the gastrointestinal system including esophagus, stomach, gall bladder and small intestine. He also specializes in solid organ surgery such the spleen, pancreas and the adrenal glands. Dr. Teixeira is a national expert and leader in bariatric surgery. He developed an interest in obesity early in his career and has performed several thousand bariatric surgeries since 1998. He was a pioneer in developing new and advanced techniques in treating obesity such as Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass, participated in FDA trials to evaluate the Realize Gastric Band in the United States and developed new methods such as endoscopic stenting to treat complications of bariatric surgery and single incision laparoscopic surgery. He has published numerous articles and studies in Peer Reviewed Journals as well as chapters in text books and lectured extensively nationally and internationally. Dr. Teixeira has been named several times as one of the Best Doctors in New York by Castle Connolly and serves as a national reviewer for the American College of Surgeons. Tatiana Sousa, M.D., FAAD

Tatiana Sousa, M.D. is a board-certified dermatologist who completed her undergraduate degree in biology with a minor in chemistry at the College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown, New Jersey. She earned her medical degree and completed her internal medicine internship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. She received multiple awards in medical school and in her undergraduate years for excellence in biology, anatomy, and research. Dr. Sousa went on to complete her dermatology residency at Case Western Reserve University-MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. She served as academic chief resident in her final year and has been published in various medical journals. Dr. Sousa participated in local and national medical conferences throughout her undergraduate, graduate, and residency training, where she has given both poster and oral presentations.  In addition to being a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, Texas Dermatological Society, Texas Medical Association, Travis County Medical Society, and Austin Dermatological Society, Dr. Sousa is regularly involved in medical volunteer work. She continues to volunteer and serve as medical staff at Camp Discovery every summer, a week-long camp dedicated to children with genodermatoses, vascular and melanocytic birthmarks, and chronic skin conditions. Dr. Sousa currently works at Westlake Dermatology in Austin, TX where she practices medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.

In 2011, I joined the Department of Anesthesiology at Duke Medical Center- maintaining an active research involvement and became the Director of Clinical Anesthesia Research Endeavor (CARE). Lastly, in 2015, I rejoined the Department of Anesthesiology at Yale with responsibilities as Chief of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Director of Clinical Research, Interim Division Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia, Director of Perfusion Services, and Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship.  As a junior faculty at Yale, I participated in research pursuits addressing inflammatory responses during and after cardiopulmonary bypass that led to many landmark publications. Examples include multicenter studies investigating effects of complement inhibition and clinical outcomes; C-reactive protein and atrial fibrillation; leukocytosis and atrial fibrillation.  I was a member of the notable Multicenter Study on Perioperative Ischemia (McSPI) research group for nearly 20 years.  Our group published in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, circulation, Anesthesiology, etc; with several of them resulting in changes in Standard-of-Care worldwide (i.e. perioperative beta blockers, early aspirin use following CABG surgery, and discontinuation of Aprotinin use in cardiac and major vascular surgery). More recently, our research efforts have centered on platelets and other micro-thrombotic factors that exacerbate morbidity and mortality in the setting of major vascular procedures.    I have also served 17 years in the military including being a war veteran and recognized with the following awards: Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Metal, National Defense Service Award, and Army Commendation Medal.  On the civilian side, I have also been fortunate to receive the following awards and recognitions: Member, Association of University Anesthesiologists, Best Doctors in America, Who’s Who in America, America’s Top Anesthesiologists, Section Editor – Cardiovascular Anesthesia; Current Opinion in Anesthesiology, Physician of the Year Award, NY Physician-of-year Award, and the President Citation Award, Society of Critical Care Medicine.  I have been affiliated with the following Professional Organizations: Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology (SCA), American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA), Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiology, American Heart Association (AHA), American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS), Association of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologist (ACA), and Society of Academic Anesthesia Associations (SAAA).   I have published some 150 peers and non-peers reviewed manuscripts/ book-chapters/ abstracts, editorials, and case-reports as well as book editor; and have lectured worldwide as an invited scholar more than 100 times.  Lastly, over the past 25 years, I have participated in medical mission work in South and Central America, Russia, China, India, Vietnam, Cuba and Cabo Verde. Vanessa M. Britto, M.D., M.Sc., FACP

Dr. Vanessa Britto is Associate Vice President for Campus Life and Executive Director of Health and Wellness at Brown University in Providence, RI. She is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician having completed a Fellowship in General Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital and a Master of Science degree in Community Health at Brown University. Dr. Britto is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown and is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians.  As a second generation Cape Verdean American, raised in Wareham, Massachusetts, Dr. Britto attended Wareham public schools and went on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College and her Medical Doctor degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Dr. Britto has practiced medicine in a number of clinical settings including federally-qualified community health centers, private practice, and college and university health centers.  Dr. Britto has held regional and national leadership roles in college health and higher education administration and is a trustee emerita of Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. In her current role, she leads a multidisciplinary team of over 200 clinical and healthcare professionals who support and care for a community of 10,000. She is a national and international speaker with a deep and broad understanding of the intersection of medicine, health promotion, and wellness particularly in the setting of higher education, women’s health and underrepresented communities of color. Dr. Veronica Maria Pimentel, MD, MS, FACOG

Dr. Veronica Maria Pimentel, MD, MS, FACOG, is a physician born in S. Nicolau, Cabo Verde.  She is an assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine.  Dr. Pimentel is double board-certified in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) and Obstetrics and Gynecology (ObGyn).   She practices in Connecticut at Trinity Health Of New England where she serves as the Director of Research for the ObGyn Residency and as the Course Director for the MFM Sub-Internship.  Dr. Pimentel has authored several publications and has presented at many international, national, regional and local conferences and meetings, including in Cabo Verde.     Dr. Pimentel is actively involved with the medical, state, local and online communities.  Dr. Pimentel is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and has collaborated with this organization to recognize the contributions of enslaved Black women to the field of ObGyn.  She is also an active collaborator of the March of Dimes of Connecticut and the Connecticut Perinatal Quality Collaborative.  Dr. Pimentel writes an educational column called “Ask Dr. Vero” for the CVNetworkTV.com.  Her website is VeroMD.net and she tweets at @DrVeroPimentel. 

Dr. Carla C. Moreira

Dr. Carla C. Moreira is a vascular and endovascular surgeon with expertise in a broad spectrum of complex open and minimally invasive operations and the treatment of all forms of vascular conditions. She graduated with Honors from Rhode Island College in 2003 with a B.A. in Biology and Chemistry. In 2008, she received her M.D. from Alpert Medical School of Brown University and completed her residency in General Surgery at the University of Chicago in 2013. This was followed by 2- year fellowship training in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Boston Medical Center. In 2015, she returned to RI joining the Department of Surgery at Alpert Medical School of Brown University where she is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery. In 2018, she was appointed Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Providence VA Medical Center. She holds attending privileges at Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Women & Infants Hospital, Fatima Hospital, and Roger Williams Hospital. Dr. Moreira has established an unblemished professional reputation and is strong proponent of multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to the care of patients with vascular disease. In addition to her busy clinical practice, Dr. Moreira embraces her role as a clinician educator by being actively involved in the teaching of residents, medical students, and other allied health professionals. In 2018, she was awarded the Brown University Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award, given in recognition of exceptional teaching and mentoring as a lecturer and preceptor. Her research interests include developing methods for addressing health disparities through Quality Improvement (QI) interventions and characterizing the impact of social determinants of health (SDoH) on the care and outcome of patients with atherosclerotic disease. She is Co-Chair of the Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Committee for the Department of Surgery, and serves on numerous other hospital and university committees working to expand the missions of social justice, health equity, and diversity of the biomedical workforce. In 2019, she established SURGE Lab, an innovative quality improvement and health disparities research and mentoring program to aid in the recruitment, retention, advancement of underrepresented minority students and faculty in academic medicine. Dr. Moreira is a native of Cape Verde, speaks fluent Capeverdean Creole and Portuguese, has working knowledge of conversational and medical Spanish. She is married and has 2 small boys.

Dr. Tracy Collins

Dr. Tracy Collins is a physician specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Temple University School of Medicine and completed a residency at Duke University Medical Center. She is board certified, and has been in private practice in Munster, Indiana since 1993. Dr. Collins had been a clinical instructor at Indiana University Northwest Medical School, where she had taught medical students lower genital tract pathology and infections for several years, prior to her starting her family. In addition to delivering thousands of babies, Dr. Collins performs minimally invasive surgery and since 2012, has performed hundreds of robotic surgeries. Dr. Collins has participated in several medical missions, primarily in Haiti, but in West Africa as well, providing care to under and unserved populations.
